Blackjack Guide: Dealer 17 Rules, Player Actions, and Payout Math

Blackjack becomes much easier to read once three details are clear: how the dealer handles soft 17, what a natural blackjack pays, and whether the table allows actions such as surrender or doubling after a split.

Hard 17 and Soft 17

A hard 17 contains no ace counted as 11, such as 10+7. A soft 17 contains an ace counted as 11, such as A+6. Standard tables require the dealer to stand on hard 17. On soft 17, the table card will state either S17 (dealer stands) or H17 (dealer hits). Always use the rule displayed on the current table.

The soft-17 rule changes the dealer's drawing procedure and can change a few basic-strategy decisions. It does not make a weak total safe. For example, a hard 16 against a dealer 7 is normally a hit on common multi-deck charts under either rule, unless surrender or another table-specific option changes the decision. Use the strategy chart for the exact table rules rather than guessing from one rule in isolation.

Card Values and a Natural Blackjack

Cards 2 through 10 count at face value; J, Q, and K count as 10. An ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever gives the better total without busting. A hand above 21 busts immediately.

A natural blackjack is an ace plus a 10-value card in the first two cards. It is not the same as reaching 21 with three or more cards. A common payout is 3:2, while some tables pay 6:5. The difference is substantial, so read the table card before betting.

Player Actions

Hit: take another card.

Stand: keep the current total and wait for the dealer to complete the hand.

Double: add a second wager, receive exactly one card, and then stand. Availability and permitted totals vary.

Split: turn a pair or equal-value opening cards into two hands and place a second main wager. Rules for split aces, re-splitting, and doubling after a split vary.

Insurance, Surrender, and Side Bets

When the dealer shows an ace, some tables offer insurance for up to half the main bet. It normally pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. Insurance is a separate wager: its result does not change how the main hand is settled.

Where offered, surrender returns half the main stake and ends the hand. Side bets such as Perfect Pairs or 21+3 have separate paytables and usually a different house edge from the main game. Confirm each amount separately on the bet panel.

Casino Blackjack and Vietnamese Xì Dách

Vietnamese casual games may use local hands such as Xì Bàn or Ngũ Linh. Those rules do not automatically carry over to casino blackjack. Online settlement follows the rules and paytable shown on the current table.

Before You Play

Check the blackjack payout, S17 or H17 rule, number of decks, double and split restrictions, surrender availability, and every selected side bet. No system guarantees a win. Set a fixed budget and time limit, and stop when either is reached.
